Robert Rosen
Robert Rosen appears in the held texts as a theorist of anticipatory systems and of the organisation of living things. Levin and co-authors cite his 1985 book when relating agency to anticipation2. They also cite it in discussions of what counts as an individual organism6. His (M,R) framework is named as a candidate to merge with Levin's TAME framework1.

Anticipation and agency
In Levin's 2022 TAME paper, Rosen's work is used twice. Agency is said to be related to autopoiesis and to anticipatory systems, with Rosen (1985) as the source for the second2. The paper also lists Rosen's (M,R) systems and anticipatory systems, cited to 1973, 1979 and 1985, among frameworks that TAME may be merged with, alongside Active Inference1. The passages call TAME incomplete and give this merging as one line of ongoing development. They do not describe Rosen's own arguments in detail.
Organisation of living systems
Other authors draw on Rosen for the structure of living systems. Ciaunica, Shmeleva and Levin cite Rosen (2005) for the idea that self-organizing autonomous systems are organizationally closed, with a network of processes that depend on each other to generate themselves5. Pio-Lopez and colleagues cite a 2012 Rosen work for the claim that all biological systems can be analysed in terms of sensory and internal states and the relations between them3. They use this to support a biological reading of the Markov blanket.
Place in a lineage
Levin cites Rosen (1985) in a list of work on compound individuals. Fields and Levin place their observer-focused, substrate-independent view of agency in a line running from Ashby through Maturana and Varela and Pattee to Rosen4. In these passages Rosen is a background source for later authors. None of them disputes his claims.
