SovietRx

A reading room for Soviet pharmacology.

Reading the original work

SovietRx brings together compounds, papers and research traditions from Soviet and post-Soviet pharmacology. It follows names across languages and across institutions, so that an account of a drug can be traced back to the experiments behind it.

We are interested in questions that recur in this literature: how cells respond to stress, how function changes during recovery, and what a short peptide can actually do. The archive gives us material to examine those questions. A historical claim still needs to survive the same scrutiny as a recent one.

From a claim to a comparison

Pinealon is one example. Our audit of the performance studies found that a rat’s improvement during repeated training could not all be attributed to treatment. Retaining the trained control changed the interpretation. In the human paper, one printed percentage did not agree with the displayed means.

Those distinctions are the reason to return to the source: which preparation was used, who or what was tested, what was measured, and which comparison supports the conclusion. Several papers from the same research group also answer a different question from independent replication.

The reading room

The library connects compounds with papers, topics and research lineages. Its methodology explains how records are gathered and how automated extraction is used. These records help readers locate evidence; their presence in the library is not a finding that a treatment works.
